Meet your professors | Prof. Dr. Daniel Wentzel
An interview with Prof. Dr. Daniel Wentzel, Head of Chair of Marketing and teaching professor in our M.Sc. Management & Engineering in Technology, Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Marketing.
Prof. Dr. Daniel Wentzel
Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Prof. Wentzel: I have been a professor of marketing at RWTH Aachen University since 2011. Before that, I was working at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland for seven years. I really enjoyed my time there but like RWTH Aachen University much better. The technologies and innovations that emerge here provide a great environment for research and teaching in marketing.
What is your role at RWTH Business School and the MME TIME program?
Prof. Wentzel: Obviously, I teach mostly marketing-related courses. One of the core courses in the MME TIME program is Marketing Management. In this course, we look at the basic logic of marketing – how to understand customer needs, how to segment the market, and how to turn these insights into a winning marketing concept. In the course, students also complete an extensive group project where they have to develop a new product or service concept and the corresponding marketing strategy. That always proves to be a very challenging but also very fun experience!
What do you like about marketing?
Prof. Wentzel: I like marketing because to me it’s a fascinating cross-over between the creative and the rational, between psychology and strategy. On the one hand, you will always need a good idea about what customers want and need. At the same time, this will not be enough, as you will also need the tools and the hands-on knowledge to make that idea work.
