From Stereotypes to Friendships: Embracing Life in Germany | Nihal Patel
Moving to Germany comes with its challenges, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to connect with new people and cultures. In this blog post, Nihal Patel (Full-Time MBA) shares how he broke through cultural barriers, made lifelong friends, and immersed himself in German life through language, local events, and unconventional adventures.
Moving to a new country...
is always a thrilling mix of fear and excitement. As someone who loves diving into adventures, I view it as an opportunity to live life to the fullest, meet incredible people, and immerse myself in diverse cultures. My journey has taken me to many international destinations, but today, I want to share tips that helped me connect with German culture as a newcomer to Germany.
We’ve all heard the stereotypes: Germans love rules, they’re reserved, and they’re direct. While some of these traits hold true, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the warmth and authenticity of Germans when you make an effort to understand and connect with them.
The Secret Sauce: Learn and Connect
If you want to truly integrate into German culture, focus on two things:
- Learn German.
- Make German friends.
These go hand in hand, and the best way to achieve both is by actively participating in activities where you can meet people. For me, it began with exploring events like Toastmasters, language and culture exchange meetups, various sports & art clubs and AIESEC gatherings. Toastmasters turned out to be my favorite. Not only did it improve my German skills, but it also introduced me to a network of incredible friends.
Unconventional Adventures
One unexpected gem in my journey was Bumble BFF. Through this platform, I connected with amazing individuals, including a group who invited me to a Halloween murder mystery night. Picture this: a cozy evening of three-course meals, wine, and a thrilling game with German strangers who soon became friends. It was one of the best adventures of my life, and it shattered many stereotypes I had about Germans.
Opportunities Beyond Social Apps
Networking doesn’t stop with social events. I attended job fairs like Bonding, which not only opened doors to career opportunities but also invited me into company gatherings. Each experience enriched my understanding of the culture and introduced me to new perspectives.
The Bottom Line
To fully embrace life in Germany—or any new culture—you need to shed your shyness, stay curious, and keep exploring. Every step you take to build connections will lead to golden memories. Germans themselves are the best guides to their culture, and as a bonus, you’ll find your German skills improving along the way.
So, take the leap. Say Ja! to every opportunity. You’ll thank yourself for it later.
